Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue

want to get up into the high alpine and ski big glacier lines? want to complete longer traverses? Interested in ski mountaineering?

- learn when/when not to rope up, how to travel roped up on a glacier, glacier terrain interpretation, glacier hazard assessment

- learn the basic crevasse rescue system and how it can be modified based on the situation

- learn about the different gear that is recommended and when to use what equipment

- spend 4 days with ACMG Ski Guides skiing in glacier terrain who are there to instruct and teach and answer your questions/work on the skills you want to spend time developing

- 6 students per group max.

COURSE ITINERARY

  • Day 1 - classroom day (1/2 day inside, 1/2 day outside, could all be outside weather and venue depending)

    - ropes and cordage and carabiners and fancy doodads, choosing the right gear

    - roping up and moving together on the glacier

    - crevasse rescue systems

    - trip plans, route plans, whiteout navigation plans

    - map and compass skills (bearings, orienting the map, interpreting the map onto terrain, resection, position fixing)

    - digital navigation tools

    - trip planning resources

    - advanced decision-making tools/techniques


    Days 2-4 - field days (venues include Rogers Pass, 93/N, Lake Louise area),

    - travel on glaciers, use glaciers to access summits, get up close and personal with glaciers

    - assess glacier travel conditions and hazards

    - learn how to ski downhill with the rope on if needed.

    - use our new skills to find the best skiing possible!
